For King and country...

Or at least Kinglets out in the country...
Laurie and I are lucky enough to volunteer at the Black Swamp Bird Observatory and the past week was one on the last for bird banding. The woodlands here are chock full of Kinglets this time of year along with many other migrating species. I thought I'd show you a few of my favs from the weekend.

Golden-crowned Kinglets are one of our favorites.

Here's a Ruby-crowned Kinglet trying to hide in the marsh.

What's that saying, "Two in the hand is worth three in the bush?"

New Library at KNNR

Mary, Stefan's widow, with Smudger and the Snipe unveiling the new library at Kenfig on 18th Oct. I'm sure that Stefan would have been pleased that his books, which he loved, would be put to such good use. We should all thank Mary for her most generous donation to Glamorgan birdwatching. Also congrats to Smudger and Alan for their new book Birding in Glamorgan, a must for all who birdwatch in the county. Well done from all at the CBC.

GBC forum

As I am no longer a member of GBC I cannot reply to a post made on it addressed to me,so unfortunately I feel I have to do it here.

"Technically, Nigel, I don't think the term 'bastard' - if it was used - is racist, but you can ask the Commission for Equality and Human Rights for guidance if you feel you have a case)."

Well Paul, technically the term 'bastard' ,I have to agree, I would not class as racist, however,if you bothered to read my origonal post correctly, you will note that "were/are reffered to as the Cardiff bastards",( the actual words used by the way in an email sent in error to one of the Cardiff birders by a previous committee member of GBC) .I am sure you will now agree the term used now borders racist. So technically,if I were to take this to the Commission for Equality and Human Rights as you suggest, I fancy I would have a case, don't you ?
Furthermore, the Cardiff Bird Club blog is not invitation only, if it was how did you get to view it to be able to describe a 'declaration of war' on it? Even you are indeed very welcome to post on CBC, member or not, with or without an invite!

News

As you may now be all aware, I took over from GFT on 1/10/2009 as CR for Eastern Glamorgan. During this brief period since the 1st, I have been in consultation with many prominent members both in the East and the West about a radical overhaul of the way the county is served by its respective rarities committees. Agreements have now been reached from both West and East Glamorgan to form a new rarities committee comprising of members from both the old committees into a new and fully independent Glamorgan Rarities Committee (GRC) which will cover all the local description species for the county of Glamorgan. It in no way infringes on the independence of the respective bird recorders, bird reports, how they are edited or the clubs that administer them, (GOS/GBC). This new committee is to be served by a new team consisting of Barry Stewart, Paul Roberts, Mike Powell (WRP rep), Paul 'Sid' Parsons and myself. As you notice many old faces have gone from the previous old stlye committee: Geri Thomas, Steve Moon, Richard Smith and Dean Bolt. All have now retired. I personally wish to thank all four for their time and efforts, given freely, in the service of birdwatching in Glamorgan. A new list of species that require descriptions will published in future reports, however the list below is probably the final new version that all observers will need to comply to, in respect of either written or photographic evidence as to proof of identity. So please enjoy your birdwatching and have fun doing it. David Gilmore
